Come late October when the rains have started here in the Portland area, Dave and I will be catching a little sunshine in Palm Desert, California. That’s where we will be installing our latest large scale metal sculpture Shapely Two. The piece was juried into the 2010-2012 El Paseo Sculpture Invitational along with 17 other sculptures from around the nation. The art will line El Paseo Drive, adding even more dazzle to the town’s glitzy shopping district.

Shapely Two, aptly enough, is the second in the Shapely family. This series is an exploration of pure abstraction where we’re having fun playing with color and form. Shapely Two has a sleeker, more space-age look than its predecessor Shapely. The “Sexy Copper” paint softens the chill of the silver metallic midsection creating a dynamic balance of color.
The modular sculpture will travel in three pieces to Palm Desert, making it easier for moving, transport and installation (set for October 25th). It will travel in a 26-foot (!) rental truck along with our upcoming sculpture Sprouted Bumbershoot which we are installing in San Diego on October 19th. But that’s a whole other blog post so stay tuned.
You can read more about Dave’s fabrication process for Shapely Two in previous posts. We welcome your comments & feedback.

You guys produce some very interesting artwork. I have always wanted to learn how to weld, what a fun career.
Steve
Thanks Steve. It is a fun career. It’s a great adventure, really. Some of our local community colleges offer great welding classes, e.g. Clark College (where I got my start) and Clackamas Community College.
